Earth Day

Each year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day, which highlights the beauty and fragility of the blue planet, as well as the threat humans, cause by living wastefully.

At WholyMe, we are committed to reducing our impact on the planet, both in how we make our products, as well as how we work as a company.

In this article, we take a look at how we can all reduce our environmental impact and nurture more sustainable living habits by making five easy swaps:

Swap 1. Single-use plastic for reusable materials

Understatement alert: Single-use plastic is one of the biggest blights on the environment. However, the abundance of plastic in everyday goods – from vegetable wrapping to toilet cleaner – is difficult to avoid.

However, some single-use plastic is easily avoidable by making some simple swaps. One of these is by opting for reusable beeswax wraps instead of single-use cling film when wrapping food. It also makes your sandwiches feel a bit more special!

Additionally, Britain gets through 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups each year, with less than 1 in 400 recycled. There is a huge market for reusable coffee cups, with different designs, sizes, materials and features. Buying one of these can save hundreds of cups from landfills each year. A worthwhile investment!

Swap 2. Supermarket chains for local markets and shops

While supermarkets may be your go-to when you need a punnet of raspberries, there are more environmentally-friendly places to visit.

Shopping in local greengrocers, market stalls, or at local farmers markets often means less plastic packaging, not to mention cheaper produce generally.

Additionally, these markets tend to have a focus on in-season and often locally-grown fruit and vegetables, which is another eco-friendly boost.

Swap 3. Driving to work for cycling to work

The benefits of ditching your car and cycling to work instead are obvious – to both yourself and the planet.

Appropriately for an Earth Day article, the number one reason to cycle to work is that you drastically reduce your carbon emissions. Not only does producing a car take around 42g of CO2 emissions per kilometre driven, driving that car emits around 271g CO2 per passenger per kilometre.

Then we have other benefits, like improving your fitness, helping you maintain a healthy weight, saving time stuck in traffic, giving you better quality sleep, and improving your mental health. Ultimately, it’s a no brainer!.

Swap 4. Hand-washing for dishwasher

If you have been looking for an excuse to be lazy, then look no further! Forget washing your dishes by hand – just let the dishwasher do the hard work.

While it may seem counterintuitive, research by Which? has revealed that, on average, dishwashers are four times more water-efficient than washing dishes by hand (per place setting).

Each dishwasher model will naturally differ, but the most water-efficient full-size dishwasher will use almost 10 times less water to wash the same number of dishes as washing them by hand.

So put away your marigolds, save time, save energy, and relax!

Swap 5. Greenwashing for proven products

The term ‘greenwashing’ refers to those dubious marketing claims made by certain companies about the environmental benefits of their products.

These may be misleading, unverified, or simply untrue – and it’s not a good thing for shoppers wanting to make the best decisions.

If you can, shop from companies that back up their claims. For example, at WholyMe, we are certified by the Soil Association, which governs not only our products but each manufacturing step.

All our ingredients are certified organic. This means that, without doubt, these ingredients are grown, harvested and extracted following a strict standardised process that is environmentally-friendly, while respecting human health. Our suppliers are regularly audited by their certifiers to maintain their certification.

Check out our certified-organic Relief Drops for instilling a sense of calm in your life and our award-winning organic Relief Balm for easing joint and muscle aches. Meanwhile, our Relief Salts are certified natural and infused with organic essential oils.
